My husband and I realized something early in the pandemic. We hadn’t been getting as much out of city life as we’d like for quite some time. See, we’re frugal people and honestly, we don’t utilize the city enough. And as far as affordable, Seattle isn’t made of it. Even in our neck of the woods, unless we want to eat banh mi every night affordable meals do not abound. And affordable bar doesn’t really exist. It’s just not sustainable to get a lot out of the city. That’s one of the reasons we longed for a quieter town to live in.
When we found our land on the peninsula. We started camping on it and began exploring the small town that was minutes away. We saw the Let’s Go Brandon sign on our way into town. We saw a Confederate Flag outside of someone’s house. When it comes down to it, we’ve both experienced small town hard right conservatism before. We know that some places and some people will welcome us and some will shun us and be downright hostile to us.

So far our town has been very welcoming. We’ve met some nice people and we haven’t met anyone who’s made us feel unwelcome, though I’m still waiting for that shoe to drop. Right now though, I’ll settle for the real and small conversations I’ve had in hardware stores, farmer’s market, and coffee barn. The people seem very kind and interested in the new people with the sweet dog.
And for now, that’s good enough.
